Blue Monday

Blue Monday
I’m like the rays of the sun
west in the morning east when the day is done
and I work lord knows how I work
work in the city with all of those jerks how long?
You don’t know how hard
what do I do it for?
As sure that old sun crawls across the sky
you know I must answer the call
Blue Monday comes and it’s raining
let’s not and say that we did is the refrain
rude morning bares its ivory fangs
hustles along its muddled up prey into the rain
but I’ve got a ray of sun
‘cause when the work day is done
I run into your loving arms
into your loving arms I run
hugging and kissing and everything fun hey hey

The Cold Blues

The Cold Blues
I light a burner on the stove
and put the water on low
I can wait a long time for it to boil.
I push a seed into the earth
and I cover it with dirt
and I let it lay there—I trust the soil.
Put on your hat my darling
put on your shoes
we’re going somewhere but I’ve got the cold blues.
I’ve got a knife of hardened steel
sharpened on a grinding wheel
and in my hand it cuts a straight line.
I step outside to breathe the air
and in the lonesome night I stand and stare
through all the wind up at the moonshine.
Put on your hat my darling
put on your shoes
we’re going somewhere but I’ve got the cold blues.
Could be a little while
before it snows
could be a long time, I just don’t know.
I sing a little song
of days gone by
and I hold the notes out to make you cry.
Put on your hat my darling
put on your shoes
we’re going somewhere but I’ve got the cold blues.

The Southwest Chief
If you’ve never seen the ocean if you’d like to see the sea
if you’re on the train from Denver out to old Albuquerque
out to old Albuquerque
You don’t have to book an airplane there’s no need to pay that fee
if you mean to see the ocean you’ll stay on the train with me.
If you’ve gone to see your grandma while you’re on a break from school
if you’ve done the things she’s asked you with your hands and with your tools
with your hands and with your tools
There’s no need for you to mention where you’re going when you leave
if you mean to see the ocean you’ll stay on the train with me.
Stay on the train with me stay on the train with me
to see the sea stay on the train with me.
If you’ve gone down to the mess car if you’ve got yourself a beer
if you’ve sat down by the window where the desert stars shine clear
the desert stars shine clear
There’s no need for you to wonder if you’ll pass this way again
if you need to see the ocean and you mean it then you can
Stay on the train with me stay on the train with me
to see the sea stay on the train with me.
Oh it’s one time for the river and it’s two times for the plains
it’s three times for the way the light plays shadows when it rains
it plays shadows when it rains
Oh it’s four times for the valley and it’s five times for the hills
It’s six times if you come with me and god, I hope you will
Stay on the train with me stay on the train with me
to see the sea stay on the train with me.

The Good Samaritan
I think you know me
I’m the one who was there when you broke down
picked you up off of the ground
then you showed me
you could be the one to turn me around
when I’ve come unwound
It’s been a long time I’ve been waiting for you
such a long time now
it’s been a long time I’ve been waiting for this
waiting for your kiss
Heaven help me
something out there wants to tear me apart
out there in the dark
can you tell me
you’ll come meet me in the morning
then it wouldn’t be so hard
It’s been a long time I’ve been waiting for you
such a long time now
it’s been a long time I’ve been waiting for this
waiting for your kiss

Poisonous Spider

Poisonous Spider
There’s a poisonous spider I saw yesterday
it’s living inside her it hisses and says
that there’s not much worth doing these days
and things aren’t like they used to be anyway
I went in to get it with the heel of my shoe
but all through her body I ran into you
oh and why don’t you leave her alone
you’ve chewed enough off of her bones
A spider has legs and he uses them to crawl
you don’t see them move but you’re feeling them all
when you tug at the hem of my sleeve
and say things I know you don’t believe
I’ll talk to him though maybe he needs a fly
I’ll show him my wings and my twenty green eyes
and I’ll draw his attentions away
and I’ll feed him just fine for a day
The next day I’ll show him the way to the door
and I’ll make it clear that he’s welcome no more
and then we’ll never see him again

My Bus Stops

My Bus Stops
A nighttime visitor, and I almost didn’t answer the door
for there was knocking but I was talking on the phone
But it persisted ‘til I couldn’t resist anymore
I climbed downstairs to the first floor
Standing on the stoop was a stranger tall and plain
but he held out his arms and he spoke my name
Oh sometimes my bus stops to drop off people I once knew
and sometimes my love won’t come by and that’s OK too
We sat down on the stairs and he took me back to days
when we were younger and we lived different ways
but it was getting late and he walked into the dark
he left no number I could call
Oh sometimes my bus stops to drop off people I once knew
and sometimes my love won’t come by and that’s OK too
Now on summer nights when I’m pacing on the floor
I leave one ear trained to the front door
and if a knocking comes I will run back down the stairs
maybe one day he’ll be standing there
Oh sometimes my bus stops to drop off people I once knew
and sometimes my love won’t come by and that’s OK too.

Just Like a Human
What was I doing to bring me to ruin?
it seems I just fell apart
just like a human
I fell down and broke my heart
I saw a shooting star
and wondered where you are
and why we’re so far apart
What was I thinking?
I just kept drinking
I just kept sinking down
just like a human
I got lost and you left town
I saw a shooting star
and wondered where you are
and why we’re so far apart

Over the Mountain

Over the Mountain
Over the mountain the weeds have grown
but here in the valley it feels like home
And here in the valley the sun it sets
on a world of happiness and no regrets
Over the mountain they are consumed
by fear and bitterness and thoughts of doom
They lie awake in their beds at night
their lives enslaved to hunger and fright
Over the mountain that’s where I’ve been
already been there don’t want to go again
Cause here in the valley I long to stay
and build a monument with all my days
But time has ways of pulling tricks
you can’t count on anything and all blessings are mixed
So go out drinking and live like kings
lord only knows what tomorrow brings.
